Adobe Acrobat Upgrade Phishing Scam Emails

Issue 128 Start Menu

Previous Article            Next Article

Outline
Emails purporting to be from Adobe claim that recipients can download an upgraded version of Adobe products by following links in the messages.

Brief Analysis
The emails are not from Adobe. The emails are part of a phishing scam designed to procure credit card and other personal information under false pretences. Links in the emails lead recipients to a website that has no connection whatsoever with the real Adobe website or any Adobe products. The bogus site attempts to entice visitors into registering an account and using a credit card to purchase site "access and support". Recipients should not click on any links included in these spam emails.

Detailed Analysis
Spam emails purporting to be from software company Adobe have now been hitting inboxes for several months. The emails claim that recipients should follow a link in order to upgrade to a new and enhanced version of "Adobe Acrobat" or "Adobe Acrobat Reader".

However, the emails are not from Adobe and the links do not open a genuine Adobe website. Links in the emails open a website that has no connection with Adobe and does not provide upgrades to any Adobe products. Those who click the link to the bogus website may then click the "Download" button in the mistaken belief that they will thereby acquire the promised Adobe product upgrade. Instead, they will be redirected to a Russian based website where they are asked to register in order to gain further access. Once users complete this registration process, they are then asked to select an access plan that they are required to pay for via their credit card.

Adobe has published the following information on its website, warning customers about the spam emails:
It has come to Adobe’s attention that email messages purporting to offer a download of a new version of Adobe Reader have been sent by entities claiming to be Adobe. Many of these emails are signed as “Adobe Acrobat Reader Support” (or similar), and in some instances require recipients to register and/or provide personal information. Please be aware that these emails have not been sent by Adobe or on Adobe’s behalf.

The Adobe Reader is free software available for download directly from the Adobe Reader download page on the Adobe website at http://get.adobe.com/reader/; it is not available in any other manner via download, including via email.

Customers receiving one of these emails should delete the email immediately without clicking on any of the links.
If you receive one of these emails, do not follow any links that they may contain. Note that some versions of the emails reportedly attempt to trick users into downloading and installing malware.
