Chrome Extension Timeline Removal Tip

Issue 128 Start Menu

Previous Article            Next Article

Outline
Message circulating on Facebook explains how to remove Timeline by adding an extension to the Chrome browser.

Brief Analysis
The tip works after a fashion, but is misleading. Installing the extension will NOT remove Timeline as suggested in the tip. The extension only changes YOUR view of Facebook. Other people who view your profile and do not have the extension installed will still see the Timeline. Timeline will still be displayed if you view Facebook in other browsers that do not have such an extension installed. And, timeline "remover" extensions are available for most browsers, not just Google Chrome. These extensions usually work by instructing your browser to pretend to be an old version of Internet Explorer that Facebook does not support and this could potentially lead to unexpected browsing problems.

Timeline Remover Tip

Detailed Analysis
This message, which is currently rocketing rapidly around Facebook, professes to offer users a way of removed the oft maligned Timeline feature that is currently being rolled out across the network. The message claims that the Google Chrome browser must be used for the method to work. It explains how to add an extension to the Chrome browser that will supposedly remove Timeline.

However, the message is misleading. Following the instructions in the message will NOT actually remove or disable your Facebook Timeline as suggested. Instead, it will simply change YOUR view of Facebook profiles in the particular browser you are using. Other people who view your profile from their computers and do NOT have the extension installed will still see your Timeline. If you view your profile using a browser that does not have the extension - even on the same computer - your Timeline will still appear.

Moreover, the claim in the message that people must have Google Chrome to use such an extension is false. Such extensions are already available for most of the popular web browsers, not just Chrome.

Many such extensions work by instructing your browser to act like an old and outdated browser such as Internet Explorer 7 that Facebook - and even Microsoft - no longer supports. As with most extensions, your mileage may vary. The extension may work as advertised for some, but for others it may cause unexpected issues or only offer a partial solution. For example, during testing for this article, I found that while the Chrome extension more or less worked for personal profiles, it did not alter the view of Timeline on Facebook Pages.

Of course, if your REALLY hate Timeline that much, installing one of these extensions might give you some breathing space. But, do keep in mind that you are only changing your own view of Facebook in a specific browser and - unless they have also added such an extension - your Facebook friends will still see Timeline as normal. Moreover, because of the way the extensions achieve the desired result, parts of Facebook along with the appearance and functionality of other websites may also be adversely affected. Browser extensions are often somewhat buggy and can produce unexpected and unwanted results.

The bottom line? There is no way to really remove Timeline and all users will eventually get it, like it or not. While installing a "Timeline Remover" extension might be a viable workaround for some, long term, a better solution is probably to embrace Timeline as inevitable and learn to live with it. Or, alternatively, switch to another network.
