Facebook Protest Message Against Casey Anthony Book Deal

Circulating protest message claims that Casey Anthony, reviled mother of murdered two year old Caylee Anthony, is set to make a lot of money via a movie and book deal. The message asks users to boycott any such book or movie.

Brief Analysis
The message reflects widespread public support in the United States for a boycott of any book or movie deal about the case from which Casey Anthony would profit. However, as yet, no such book or movie deal has been finalized. Anthony's attorney has denied claims that she had signed a deal with a publisher to write a book via a ghost writer. According to at least some publishing industry analysts, a book deal may never happen due to the controversy surrounding the case.

Casey Anthony Book Deal Protest

Detailed Analysis
This Facebook driven protest message, addressed to murdered US two year old, Caylee Anthony, claims that Caylee's mother Casey is going to profit from a book and movie deal about the case. The message calls for a boycott of any such book or movie and asks users to pass on the information so that others can join the proposed boycott.

Given the controversy surrounding the case - Casey Anthony was acquitted of the child's murder in July 2011, but many people still believe she is guilty - protests against her profiting via a book or movie deal are certainly understandable. In fact, there has been a large groundswell of support for a consumer led boycott of any book, movie or TV deal that enriches Anthony and this circulating message is indicative of that support.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that, despite the claim in the protest message, no book or movie deal has yet been announced. While various reports about possible book deals have been going around for months, these remain unsubstantiated. Casey Anthony's attorney Jose Baez has denied claims that Anthony has struck a deal with a publisher to write a memoir via a ghost writer.

In fact, some publishing industry commentators have suggested that such a deal may never be struck. In a July 7, 2011 article, celebrity website PopEater notes:
With news that Casey Anthony will soon be a free woman, any dreams of making millions of dollars off the tragic death of her young daughter, Caylee, through potential book deals looks very unlikely.

"Publishers have a long memory and after the public outcry that led to the canceled publication of the O.J. Simpson book ['If I Did It'], everyone will think twice before offering Casey a deal," one senior book editor tells me.
And a July 18 2011 Atlantic Wire article suggests:
Casey Anthony is in a bit of a bind. The 25-year-old Florida woman acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter has almost no money and is estranged with her family (according to court records, she left jail with $537 in her inmate account). The best way for her to get back on her feet is a book or TV deal. But because many still view Anthony as guilty, any potential deal faces a wave of public scorn toward her or a potential publisher.
Nevertheless, given that there are potentially millions of dollars to be made by publishers out of a deal with Anthony, greed may well trump common sense and ethical considerations in the end. Bookmark and Share
