Facebook Request to Honor Fallen Marine Derek Wyatt

Outline
Message circulating via Facebook asks users to repost the message as a means of honoring US Marine Derek Wyatt who was killed in action in Afghanistan on December 6th, 2010.

Brief Analysis
The claims in the message are mostly true. Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt was killed in combat in Afghanistan on Dec. 6. His wife gave birth to a son the day after Marine Cpl. Wyatt was killed. The suggestion in the message that the baby - Michael Everett Wyatt - was named in honor of his father appears to be incorrect.

Facebook post to honor Derek Wyatt

Detailed Analysis
A message circulating rapidly around social network, Facebook, asks users to repost the message as a means of honoring fallen Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt, who was killed in action on December 6, 2010 while serving in Afghanistan. The message states that Marine Cpl. Wyatt's wife gave birth to their son within 24 hours of his death. It claims that the baby was named in honor of his fallen father.

Sadly, the core information in the message is factual. Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt was killed in combat on the 6th December 2010, while serving in Afghanistan. His wife, Kait, gave birth to their son, Michael Everett Wyatt, within a day of the Marine's death. Marine Cpl. Derek Wyatt was just 25 years of age.

The suggestion in the message that the newborn was named in honor of his father appears to be incorrect. The baby, Michael Everett Wyatt, does not share a first or middle name with his fallen father. News reports suggest that the baby's name was chosen by his parents well before his birth. A December 12 article about Marine Cpl. Wyatt published on news channel WEWS notes:
The day before Wyatt was deployed to Afghanistan last October, he spent time on a California beach with his pregnant wife, who is a Marine veteran.

They picked a name for their child and on the beach they wrote, "Derek + Kait = Michael."

Wyatt's friends said they'll remember Derek as a man who was always there for them. Now, those friends say they'll be there for Michael. He will never meet his dad, but he will always know him.
Some news reports mistakenly refer to the Marine as a sergeant rather than a corporal. While the text of a December 9 Fox 8 article refers to Wyatt as a sergeant, the video news report accompanying the article refers to him as a corporal. The error has caused some confusion. However, for the record, an official December 7 U.S. Department of Defense news release refers to Wyatt as a corporal.
