Detailed Analysis

Circulating Report Claims Baby Killed During NYPD Breast Feeding Arrest

According to a message that is circulating rapidly via social media, a baby was killed when an NYPD officer made a violent attempt to arrest her mother for breastfeeding in public.

The circulating message links back to a report that describes the supposed incident. According to the report, when a woman refused an NYPD police officer's request to stop breastfeeding her baby at a public bus stop, the officer became aggressive. The report claims that, when the officer used violence in an attempt to arrest the woman, the baby girl fell from her mother's arms and hit her head, dying as a result of her injuries.

The report has generated a great deal of outrage with many people condemning the violent actions of the officer as criminal. And a subsequent report in the same publication that claimed the officer was later cleared of all charges and was set to return to duty simply added fuel to the fire. According to a message that is circulating rapidly via social media, a baby was killed when an NYPD officer made a violent attempt to arrest her mother for breastfeeding in public.

Reports are False - Come From Fake-News Satire Site National Report

Thankfully, however, the claims in both reports are false. No such incident occurred. The reports were published by the fake-news website National Report, which claims to be a satirical publication.

The problem is that the site's articles are presented as news reports and contain no clear disclaimer stating that the articles are fiction.

This particular story caused such an outcry that National Report's editors published an article declaring the satirical nature of the report and defending their decision to publish it.

In recent months, National Report has been responsible for a host of fake news articles that have circulated virally via social media, causing angst and consternation as they travel.  Nothing published on the site should be taken seriously.

Fake-News Websites Increasingly Common

Fake-News sites like National Report are increasingly common.  The web makes it easy for anybody to publish all kinds of fictions and falsehoods in such a way that they resemble genuine news reports.

Before sharing any reports that come you way via social media, it is wise to check their veracity via a reputable news source. A search of a news aggregator service such as Google News should quickly reveal if a circulating report is true.
