TRUE - Fireball Whiskey Recalled in 3 European Countries

Reports and rumours currently buzzing around the Internet claim that popular cinnamon flavoured whiskey Fireball has been recalled in Europe because it contains an ingredient found in some types of antifreeze.

The claims are true, although the issue is not quite as dire as some sensationalized reports suggest.  Fireball has been recalled in Norway, Sweden and Finland because a batch of the product shipped from North America contained higher levels of propylene glycol than European regulations allow.

Propylene glycol is often used to replace the more toxic ethylene glycol in environmentally friendly antifreeze products.  While the substance can be toxic in certain circumstances, it is listed as 'Generally Recognized as Safe' by the US FDA and is commonly added to food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

However, the levels of propylene glycol that are allowed in food and drink are lower in Europe than they are in North America.

Sazerac, the US based company that owns Fireball, has published a statement on its website that notes in part:

Regulations for the product formulation are different in Europe, which explains why recipes for products like soft drinks, alcohol/spirits and even candies and confections are slightly different than their North American counterparts. Fireball, therefore, has a slightly different recipe for Europe.
Unfortunately, Fireball shipped its North American formula to Europe and found that one ingredient is out of compliance with European regulations. Finland, Sweden and Norway have asked to recall those specific batches, which is what the brand is doing. Fireball anticipates being back on the shelves for fans in these countries within three weeks.
There is also a 'joke' meme circulating that claims - falsely - that the real reason Fireball was recalled is because it 'contains traces of Ebola'.
