Facebook Survey Scam - 'Grab a Free £75 Tesco Gift Card'

Jump To: Example   References

According to a post circulating rapidly on Facebook, you can click to grab yourself a free Tesco gift card valued at £75. The post features a photograph depicting a letter from Tesco with a Tesco gift card attached.

However, the post is just another Facebook scam and is not associated with Tesco in any way. Those who are tricked into participating will not receive a Tesco gift card.

Clicking the link takes you to a fraudulent website designed to look like a Facebook webpage. The site instructs you to first share the fake webpage on Facebook and then send a link to the page to five Facebook Groups (see screenshot below).

After completing these instructions, you can then click a button, supposedly to claim your free gift card or voucher. However, clicking the claim button takes you to another bogus website that claims via a popup window that you must complete a survey before you can unlock your voucher. The popup contains links to several available surveys.

If you then click one of these links, you will be taken to a third party website that offers various prizes or free gifts in exchange for supplying personal information such as your name, address, email, home phone number, and mobile phone number. But, by supplying this information, you are in fact consenting to receive emails, phone calls, and letters from various 'third-party marketers'. Thus, you will soon be inundated with messages begging you to buy various products or services you most likely neither want nor need. In some versions, by entering your mobile phone number, you will in fact be signing up to an expensive SMS subscription service that will charge you several dollars for every text message they send you.

Meanwhile, the scammers responsible for the fake Tesco giveaway will earn commissions each and every time somebody supplies their information on one of the survey websites.

And, no matter how many surveys you complete, you will never receive the promised voucher. Moreover, because you were tricked into sharing the fake Page and spamming Facebook Groups, you will also be exposing many other Facebook users to the same scam.

Like-farming and survey scams like this one are very common. In fact, Tesco's name has been hijacked for use in several earlier versions of this scam. Be very wary of any Facebook post or Page that claims that you can win valuable prizes just by liking, sharing, and participating in online surveys. Despite a great deal of publicity about these scams, new versions appear on Facebook every day and, between them, they continue to gather large numbers of new victims.
