Kitty Cat-Astrophe! - 'Hello Kitty is Not a Cat'

A recent revelation involving iconic cartoon character Hello Kitty has rocked the interwebs to its core. Shock horror. It seems that Hello Kitty is not actually a cat!

The shocking news was revealed when University of Hawaii anthropologist Christine R. Yano referred to Hello Kitty as a cat in a speech she was preparing for an upcoming retrospective of the character at the Japanese American National Museum. But, on seeing the text of the speech, Hello Kitty creator Sanrio reportedly corrected Yano, explaining that Hello Kitty is certainly not a cat.

A Wall Street Journal article on the issue notes:

Yano says “I was corrected — very firmly” after describing Hello Kitty as a cat.

“That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty,” she said.
And, a description of the character on the official Hello Kitty fan page notes:

Hello Kitty is a cheerful and happy little girl with a heart of gold. She lives in London with her mama (Mary White), papa (George White), and her twin sister Mimmy. Hello Kitty loves to bake and she can make really delicious cookies. She learned her baking talents from her mama, who makes scrumptious apple pies that are enjoyed by the whole family.
But, according to a follow-up Wall Street Journal article, Sanrio is now suggesting that some elements may have been 'lost in translation' in initial reports. In a discussion with WSJ, a Sanrio spokesperson explains - rather vaguely - that it 'is difficult to provide a specific classification' of exactly what Hello Kitty is but that she can be considered a 'personification of a cat'.

So, after much consultation and deep thought on this contentious issue, we at Hoax-Slayer have come up with the following advise for devastated and angst-ridden Hello Kitty fans:

  • If you have always considered Hello Kitty to be a cat and have been upset by recent revelations, you are probably safe to continue thinking of her as a cat.  Just don't tell anybody, ok?

  • If you are a dynamic individual who is willing to embrace even shocking and unexpected changes in your life, then you should go right ahead and embrace Hello Kitty's non-cathood.
