Brief Analysis

The message is just a nasty hoax. iOS8 certainly does not include technology that allows you to charge your iPhone in a microwave. The message is not from Apple. In fact, putting your iPhone in a microwave oven will destroy it.

Detailed Analysis

Message Claims iOS8 iPhones Can be Charged in Microwave Oven

A message currently going viral via social media supposedly outlines a new technology that comes bundled with Apple's newly released iOS8 operating system which will allow you to charge your iPhone by placing it in a household microwave oven.

According to the message, which appears to be an official Apple advertisement, exclusive 'Wave' technology built into iOS8 allows your device to be charged wirelessly through microwave frequencies. Supposedly, 'Wave' will be automatically activated as soon as you install iOS8 and you can then charge your iPhone battery by placing it within a household microwave for a minute and a half.

Do NOT do This - Message is a Hoax

However, as users that are more astute will recognize immediately, the claims in the message are false. The message is certainly not from Apple, and iOS8 does not have any such 'microwave charging' functionality.

In fact, microwaving your iPhone as described will damage it beyond repair. It may also damage your microwave. The message is obviously just a nasty prank designed to trick gullible recipients into 'bricking' their devices.

As noted, the majority of users would quickly realize that the message is a prank. However, a few, less tech savvy, users will likely go ahead and try to charge their iPhones via a microwave.

Message is an Updated Version of an Older Hoax

In fact, the message is just an updated - and slightly more believable - version of an older hoax that also claims that you can charge smart phones by putting them in a microwave. The earlier version suggested that, back in 2005, Apple launched a 'smear campaign' designed to discouraged customers from using the 'safe' microwave charging method out of the fear that it would impact on charger sales. Of course, the earlier version is just as nonsensical as the new 'Wave' variant.

Many recipients may view the message is just a rather amusing meme. But, before you share it, you should keep in mind that at least a few people will likely take the message seriously and destroy their phones as a result.
