As if the sports world didn’t have enough people coming out of the closet. A highly respected member of the NASCAR community has come out and admitted he is in a relationship with a fellow openly gay NASCAR member.

Jeff Gordon Gay Hoax

Detailed Analysis

According to a message that is circulating via social media, popular NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon has admitted to being in a homosexual relationship with openly gay driver Stephen Rhodes. The circulating message links to a longer report on the Empire Sports website. The report claims that the announcement has generated outrage among NASCAR fans and 'has sparked a fire storm in the southern states where the rednecks tend to live'.

However, the report is a work of fiction. Jeff Gordon has made no such announcement. There are no credible media reports that support the claims in the Empire Sports article.  Nor is there any news of outraged rednecks.

The report apparently represents the author's rather lame attempt to be funny. In fact, nothing on the Empire Sports website should be taken seriously. The site includes the following disclaimer:
Empire Sports is a satirical and entertainment website.

Empire Sports uses invented names in all its stories, except in cases when public figures are being satirized. Any other use of real names is accidental and coincidental.
And, the site's About page notes:
Empire Sports is part news, part op-ed, (part, ahem, tabloid) and one hundred percent entertaining.
We report on current events in sports. Sometimes we report on news that has yet to happen. Sometimes we report things we just WISH would happen.
This is not the first time that an Empire Sports article has escaped the confines of its original context and began circulating on social media. Earlier in 2014, another article from the site falsely claimed that oft-reviled US footballer Michael Vick had been hospitalized after a Pitt Bull attack.
