'iPhone 7 Giveaway' Facebook Like-Farming Scam

Jump To: Example   References

According to an 'iPhone 7' Facebook Page that is currently being promoted across Facebook, you can win one of 100 iPhones just by liking and sharing a Page post and adding a comment specifying which colour phone you would like should you win.

But, the Facebook Page is fraudulent and is certainly not giving away any iPhones. In fact, at the time of writing, Apple has not even released the iPhone 7 and no clear release date has been announced. And, the next model iPhone may yet be called the iPhone 6S rather than the iPhone 7.

The fake giveaway Page is a typical like-farming scam designed to accumulate as many likes as possible in the shortest possible time. Pages with large numbers of likes can be used to launch survey scams and other types of fraudulent schemes, this time to a much larger pool of potential victims.

Alternatively, once it has gathered a large number of likes, the Page can be sold on the black market to other scammers. The more likes a Page has the more money it can command on the black market.

By tricking people into liking, sharing, and commenting, the scammers ensure that their fraudulent Page will be seen by a great many Facebook users and will collect a great many new likes.

This fake Page is just the latest incarnation in a long series of scam Facebook Pages that have falsely claimed to be giving away various iPhone models. Be very wary of any Page that claims that you can win an iPhone or other expensive prize just by liking and sharing.
