Phone Scammers Pretending to be from IRS
US news outlets are currently reporting a spate of IRS related phone scams. The scammers are cold calling residents and pretending to be from the IRS. The scammers claim that the victims owe considerable sums of money to the IRS and must arrange payment immediately or face serious legal consequences.
The criminals instruct their victims to purchase pre-paid credit cards and call back. When victims call as instructed, the scammers demand the card number and then transfer the pre-paid funds to an offshore account.
These scams are very similar to other phone based scams such as the Outstanding Warrant scam and the Jury Duty scam.
