Detailed Analysis

A message currently circulating via social media websites asks users to watch out for teenager Laura Clark who went missing from her UK home on February 26, 2013. The message includes a photograph of Laura along with a description and details about her last known whereabouts. The message asks recipients to contact West Midlands Police if they have any knowledge about the case.

Laura Clark was briefly missing. However, she was located safe and well on 27th February 2013. West Midlands Police posted the following notice on their website on 28th February:

OFFICERS searching for missing Laura Clark are today (Thursday 28 February) thanking the public and the media for their help track the 17-year-old to an address in Moseley last night.

Laura was found safe and well having been missing from home for just over 24 hours.

Thankfully, therefore, the continued circulation of the message is no longer required. Unfortunately, it is still circulating as well-meaning recipients continue to repost the information without realizing that the girl has already been located. The continued circulation of outdated missing person messages can waste the time of police who must deal with ongoing queries and mistaken sightings from concerned members of the public. The now redundant messages can also have a negative impact on the people featured in the missing person reports.

Therefore, it is also wise to check if a missing person message is still current and contains accurate information before you pass it on.
