Brief Analysis

The rumour is untrue. Macaulay Culkin is alive and well. A fake 'R.I.P.' Facebook Page that was set up for the star apparently kicked off the rumour. And the false story was then further fuelled by a fake 'breaking news' report that claimed that Culkin had been found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

Rumour Claims 'Home Alone' Actor Macaulay Culkin Has Died

According to a rumour that is circulating virally via social media, actor Macaulay Culkin, best known for his role as Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone movies, has died, aged 34.

Claims Are Untrue - Macaulay Culkin is Alive and Well

However, the claims are untrue. Macaulay Culkin has not died as claimed. The actor's representatives have dismissed the rumour. And, since the death story began circulating, Culkin himself has posted to his Facebook fan page.

The rumour apparently took hold after pranksters created a fake Facebook memorial page claiming the actor had died. The story gained even more momentum via a fake-news report that falsely claimed that the actor had been found dead in his home after a police wellness check.

The bogus report tries to palm itself off as an MSNBC news page.

Check Celebrity Death Reports Before Clicking or Sharing

False death reports commonly circulate via social media. In fact, another fake story that began circulating back in April 2014 also falsely claimed that Culkin had died.

It is thus wise to check any death reports that come your way before you share them or click any links they contain. The mainstream media always extensively covers the deaths of celebrities. Thus, if true, a circulating death report should be easy to verify.

While some such death reports are simply poor-taste pranks, others are more sinister and try to entice people into participating in survey scams or downloading malware.
