Mercedes Benz G-Class Giveaway Like-Farming Scam

Jump To: Example    Comments   References

According to a Facebook Page being heavily promoted across the network, you can win one of two Mercedes Benz G-Class cars just by liking a specified page, liking and sharing a promotional post, and adding a comment specifying which colour car you would like should you win.

Supposedly, this is the first time in the history of Mercedes Benz that such a giveaway promotion has occurred. The post announcing the giveaway includes an image of a G-Class Mercedes with a red ribbon on the hood.

The post promises that winners will be announced via 'inbox message'.

However, no cars are being given away and there are no winners. The Facebook Page is a typical like-farming scam designed to trick people into promoting the fraudulent prize post and liking an associated Facebook Page.

The goal of the scammers is to accumulate as many new likes as possible for the Page mentioned in the fake prize post.

A Facebook Page with high numbers of likes can be a powerful means of promoting scam or spam messages to a large pool of potential victims. Or, the Page can be sold on the black market to other scammers. The more likes a page has, the more attractive it may appear to prospective buyers.

Like-farming and survey Facebook scams continue to be very common. A 2014 version of the scam pretended to be giving away 6 Mercedes Benz CLA 45 cars. Again, the the goal of the scammers responsible for the Page was to gather large numbers of likes. Be very wary of any Page or post that claims that you can win a luxury vehicle or other valuable prize just by liking, sharing, or commenting.
