Migaloo, the white humpback whale is quite famous in Australia. Sightings are regularly broadcast on TV news reports. And his pictures and videos circulate far and wide.
Outside of Australia, however, Migaloo might not be quite so well known. And, given that we live in a time when images can be digitally manipulated with ease, it is not surprising that some people suspect tomfoolery when they come across Migaloo's picture online.
But, fair Migaloo is very real. Just about everybody interested in whale watching dreams of one day spotting him.
The White Whale Research Centre notes:
Migaloo is Australia’s most well-known humpback whale. When he was first sighted he was the only known all white whale in the world. As he migrates up the east coast of Australia from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Tropical North Queensland his distinctive all white colouring allows people to report sightings.
There has also been speculation that Migaloo may have siblings and there might in fact been more than one white whale that travels Australia's east coast. Either way, a white whale is a spectacular and awe-inspiring creature to behold. As is any whale, for that matter.
