Petition for Autism Units in Australian Schools

Summary:
Email forward asks recipients to sign an attached petition letter that requests the Australian Government to address serious problems encountered by children with Autism within the current education system (Full commentary below).

Status:
True - Petition is valid

Example:(Submitted, April 2009)
Subject: Petition for Autism units in Australian schools

Dear Friends,

Autism Advisory and Support Service (AASS) have been contacted by many parents in the past few months with grave concerns that their children with Autism are not receiving an education suited to their needs. Some parents have been forced to homeschool their children and some children are only allowed to attend school for up to two hours per day. Many children are being suspended from school for displaying behaviours that are simply manifestations of their Autism. Please help these parents by signing your name and adding your address to the attached petition and returning it to us by email. We encourage you to forward this to as many friends and family Australia wide as possible. This is something that affects us all, both short term and in the long run.

Thank you in advance for your support,
Grace Fava
President

Commentary:
This email forward outlines concerns about ongoing problems experienced by children with Autism within the Australian education system. It states that children with Autism are not having their needs met within the current system. The message asks recipients to sign and return a petition letter that requests the government to implement changes that will address the problems experienced by children with Autism at school, including the implementation of Autism specific units at all public schools.

The petition is entirely valid. As the message notes, the petition was created by the Autism Advisory and Support Service (AASS). A copy of the petition can be downloaded from the AASS website, which notes:
The petition for ASD schools to be placed in every school in Australia. Can you please forward this to your networks including schools, Members of Parliament both State and Federal, local councils and even your local papers. There are too many families suffering because their children do not have an appropriate education in a setting that suits their needs.

Grace Fava of AASS has also confirmed that the petition is real. In reply to my email enquiry about the petition, she notes:
Thanks for your email. The petition is VERY real. The problems stated on the email are unfortunately all true. Autism affects more than 1 in 100 children in Australia. This used to be 1 in 10,000 20 years ago. It is an epidemic world wide and the Australian Government is only just starting to accept the disorder and address some problems. This petition will be sent to Julia Gillard so we can try and work together with her to address the problem of educating children with Autism.

Kindest regards
Grace Fava
