The claims in the report are false. 'Shovel Girl' is alive and reportedly enjoying her sudden fame. The viral video does depict an altercation in which Miranda was whacked solidly in the head with a shovel, but the girl did not sustain serious injuries. The fake death report comes courtesy of Huzlers.com, a website notorious for churning out all manner of drivelling nonsense disguised as news.

Shovel Girl Not Dead

Detailed Analysis

According to a report that is rapidly circulating via social media, Miranda Fugate, the girl who was hit in the head in a viral fight video, has died of her injuries.

The report claims that the girl, dubbed 'Shovel Girl' by online commentators, appeared ok after the shovel head-whacking incident but later died suddenly while watching TV.

However, the claims in the report are untrue. 'Shovel Girl', aka Miranda Fugate, is alive and well. The report comes via the website Huzlers.com, a site that churns out fanciful nonsense gussied up as news. The site apparently sees itself as satirical and includes the following disclaimer at the bottom of its articles:
Huzlers.com is a combination of real shocking news and satire news to keep its visitors in a state of disbelief.
The fake death report includes a photograph supposedly depicting police attending the death scene. However, the image actually shows police investigating a crime in Chicago and was stolen from a 2012 news report.

The story is in response to a circulating video that depicts a young girl being hit in the head with a shovel by another young girl. The video caused a sensation and quickly went viral, generating a great deal of commentary as it travelled. Via a message posted to Twitter, Miranda later identified herself as the girl being hit by the shovel.

A longer version of the video revealed that the shovel incident was part of an ongoing - and apparently planned - altercation between the girls. A Huffington Post report about the video notes:
[T]he pair agrees to fight. They bring some friends along as they trudge through the woods, headed for a front yard that they eventually spar in.
They trade punches, slaps, kicks and insults before taking a break to chat, then start the process over again several times. Neither of them back down, that is, until the shovel comes out.
But, the girl was not seriously injured and soon appeared in another video that showed that she was doing fine.

It seems unfortunate that the youngsters depicted in this viral video have gained notoriety and a degree of fame out of their dangerous and irresponsible antics. The girl could well have been seriously injured in such a violent incident. But, thankfully, she is unharmed and the report of her death is just more poor-taste Huzlers nonsense.
