This message, which includes a video depicting a horrific high speed crash between an SUV and large truck, is circulating via social media and email and has also been posted to a great many websites, blogs and forums. According to the message, the footage was captured by a State Trooper's dash cam. The wording of the message implies that the accident happened because the driver took his eyes of the road for a split second, possibly while texting or reading. And by its use of the term "State Trooper", the message also implies that the accident took place in the United States.
The video is genuine. However, it did not happen in the United States. In fact, the accident occurred on February 24, 2012 near the village of Omutischi Petushk in the Vladimir Region of Russia. According to a Russian news article about the accident, the driver of the Nissan Navara SUV lost control of his vehicle, crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming Freightliner truck. The driver, identified simply as Alexander, a resident of Moscow, died at the scene. The truck driver survived the accident.
It is unclear exactly what caused the accident. The news report suggests that the Nissan's wheels touched a "furrow" of wet snow on the uncleared road which caused the driver to lose control and veer into the path of the truck. Although we perhaps will never know what the driver was doing just before the accident, there are currently no reports that suggest that the driver was texting or reading. It is unclear who took the video footage of the accident, and no reports that indicate that the camera was mounted in a police vehicle.
The report also notes that the stretch of road has a notorious reputation, having taken the lives of well known Russian actor Aleksandr Dedjushko and his wife and child in a similar accident in 2007. And, in 2009, a bus and a truck collided in the same area killing 12 passengers and both drivers.
