Fake-News Report Claims Costco to Sell Marijuana in Bulk

Jump To: Example    Comments   References

According to a report that is making its way around the Internet via social media messages and blog posts, wholesale giant Costco is set to sell marijuana in bulk from its Washington based stores.

The story, published on a website called The Kitsap Report claims that the bulk high grade marijuana will be sold under the store's Kirkland Signature brand.

However, not surprisingly, the claims in the report are untrue. Washington Costco stores will not be selling wholesale marijuana anytime soon. In Washington state people over 21 can legally possess one ounce of marijuana. They cannot legally buy the drug in bulk quantities.

The Kitsap Report is a satirical publication and stories published on the site are not real news. The site presents its fictional reports in news format and does not include any clear disclaimer that might alert readers that the stories are false.

Thus, at least a few readers are apt to take the reports seriously and share them with their friends.

There are now many 'satirical' websites that, between them, churn out a continuing stream of utter nonsense gussied up as news. It is thus wise to check any strange or unusual 'news' reports that come your way before you share them. Usually, conducting a search via a news aggregator such as Google News will quickly reveal if a circulating story is actually true.
