Detailed Analysis

According to this widely circulated email forward, recipients can print off a sheet of coupons attached to the message and use them to receive free Doritos products. The message claims that each coupon can be used to get free Doritos up to the value of $5.

The coupons arrive as a sheet of six included in an attached .pdf. Supposedly, recipients can print off and use as many coupons as they like as well as send on the coupons for use by others. The message claims that the coupons will be valid until December, 2010.

However, the claims in the message are untrue and the coupons are fakes. The coupons were not issued by Frito-Lay, the makers of Doritos. Frito-Lay has published the following information in the FAQ section of the company's website:
Q. Is this $5 Doritos Coupon valid?

A. No. A counterfeit coupon for a free bag of Doritos chips up to $5 is still circulating, primarily through e-mail. It was not created, authorized or distributed by Frito-Lay. We have notified retailer customers of this fraud and are working with authorities to identify the source of the fraudulent coupon. You should not knowingly use a counterfeit coupon. We sincerely apologize for the disappointment and confusion this has caused. Please watch for valid coupons and sales in stores, magazines, Sunday newspaper ads, and on our credible websites.
The website includes a graphic that illustrates the differences between this fake coupon and a genuine Doritos coupon.

Those who try to use the coupons will not receive free Doritos products as promised in this hoax email.
