Fake-News Report Claims That a Hunter Accidentally Shot His Wife Because He Thought She Was a Buffalo

According to a report currently circulating via social media, a hunter in Texas has accidentally shot and killed his wife because he mistook her for a buffalo. The report claims that the man was on an early morning hunt when he saw a 'big figure moving among the trees' in the dim morning light. He became convinced that he had spotted a buffalo, an animal very rare in his area, and shot it down. But, to his horror, he then discovered that the 'buffalo' was in fact his own dear wife.

The report includes a picture supposedly depicting the hunter posing with a downed deer alongside his hapless wife.

A number of commentators, while bemoaning the fate of the poor wife, have suggested that the man deserves his fate for wanting to kill such a rare animal in the first place.

But, the story is a work of fiction. The hunting accident described did not take place. The fake-news report comes from the satirical website The Portly Gazelle. The site includes the following disclaimer in the footer of its pages:
Disclaimer: All stories on this site are satire and the opinions expressed do not belong to any real people. If persons appear in the picture they have nothing to do with the story.
However, the site's material is presented in news format and visitors may not scroll down far enough to see the disclaimer. Thus, many people will share the site's fictional reports in the mistaken belief that they are genuine news stories.

The image of the hunter used in the fake story is taken from other online reports about a hunter who killed a large deer with a Glock pistol.

Of course, hunting accidents are not at all uncommon and sometimes prove fatal. And hunters do sometimes accidentally shoot spouses while hunting. But, thankfully, this story at least, is untrue.
