Dollar Bills Stamped With 'NO GOD BUT ALLAH'

Circulating message warns that Muslims are stamping the slogan "NO GOD BUT ALLAH" beneath the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" on American dollar bills. The message includes a photograph depicting such a defaced note.

Brief Analysis
The photograph appears to be genuine. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that stamping notes with "NO GOD BUT ALLAH" is a widespread, or organized, Muslim initiative.

Muslims Stamping Dollar Bills "No God But Allah"......

Simple - just check your dollar bills and see if you get one of these.

Bet you thought you'd never see this in your lifetime. A lady in Monte Vista, CO had this dollar bill.

This is her story. You don't think we're in a war. What thoughts come to mind! These are starting to show up around our country! After dinner she took a $1 dollar bill out of her purse and displayed it on the table. Underneath the words "In God We Trust" someone had stamped the dollar bill in red ink---NO GOD BUT ALLAH. We asked her where she had gotten this dollar bill. She said it was part of her change in Alamosa, CO. We took a picture of her dollar bill.

If anyone tries to give you one of these dollar bills as change, please refuse it and ask them to give you a dollar bill that has not been defaced. You can bet I will refuse this and demand it being taken out of circulation.....

Dollar Bill with NO GOD BUT ALLAH stamp

Detailed Analysis

US Dollar Bill
This protest message decrying the defacing of US bills with the words "NO GOD BUT ALLAH" has been posted to a great many websites, blogs and forums and also circulates via email and social media. The message includes a dollar bill in which the offending words have been stamped – in red – just below "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the note. The message urges people who receive one of the notes in their change to refuse to take it and demand that it be taken out of circulation.

The photograph of the defaced note appears to be genuine. Certainly, it is not the first time that slogans written on bank notes have been used to further someone’s political or religious agenda. In 2011, a group of Palestinian youth has written slogans on Israeli bank notes that call for an end to Israel's occupation. And, in 2009, slogans such as "Death to the dictator" appeared on many Iranian banknotes, prompting Iran’s Central Bank to declare such notes invalid.

However, in the case of the "NO GOD BUT ALLAH" note, there is so far no evidence to suggest that it represents a widespread or organized campaign by Muslim activists. While the protest message has been posted to a great many different websites, all include the very same photograph of the offending note. All also include the same story about the origin of the note; that it was handed as change to an unnamed woman in Monte Vista, Colorado.

If the practice of defacing currency with the Allah slogan was common or widespread, it seems clear that many other photographs of the offending notes along with further reports about them would also be circulating. Moreover, if the defacing was a common occurrence, the mainstream media would also have reported on the issue.

Certainly, if you do receive a note that has been defaced with a political or religious slogan, you are within your rights to report it to authorities. Adding such a slogan could be considered a violation of the relevant United States Code:
Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
But, as it stands, the true origin of this defaced note and who actually did the defacing remains unclear. And, the suggestion in the message that more such notes are starting to show up across the United States is so far unsupported by any credible evidence.
